The minister stressed the value of the joint efforts of the region’s cider houses, which are taking firm steps to consolidate this initiative at European level.

Barredo highlighted the importance of this designation, which would not only raise the profile of Basque cider but also allow Basque cider houses to reach new international markets, boosting the prestige of this local drink. Through collaboration between producers, the new designation will strengthen the identity and tradition of Basque cider, guaranteeing its authenticity and quality.

The Transnational Designation of Origin project seeks to bring together cider producers from different European regions, with the aim of setting common standards that protect tradition and improve the industry’s competitiveness. Barredo emphasised that this initiative is key to economic sustainability and to the international reach of Basque cider houses, a sector that continues to show its capacity for innovation and adaptation.

The minister also expressed her support for the measures being implemented to preserve local crops and encourage responsible farming practices that ensure the quality of the apples used to make cider.
