About Don Pedro Leivas
The Don Pedro Leivas cidery makes Sidra Salvaje in Espasande de Arriba, a mountain hamlet in Riotorto, in the inland part of A Mariña in Lugo province. The family cellar has been restored in keeping with Galician vernacular architecture, using stone, slate, chestnut and oak, and it is entirely underground, which keeps the temperature stable and the atmosphere dark for fermenting and ageing the cider.
Its orchards cover about two hectares on south-facing slopes, more than 500 metres above sea level, and are farmed without pesticides or chemical fertilisers. They combine native apples with sharp, sweet and bitter cider varieties such as Raxao, Collaos, Xuanina, Durona, De la Riega, Verdialona and Ollo Mouro. The natural cider is made only from apples and the site’s own yeasts, with maceration of the pulp and slow pressing, and the cidery is registered with Artesanía Alimentaria de Galicia.
Visitors are welcome to tour the premises, which include a small bar (cantina), and the ciders are sold in the online shop. In June 2026 the cidery opened its new premises with a day of tastings of Galician cider and artisan products.
