About Llagar Bernueces
Llagar Bernueces is in Castiello de Bernueces, about five kilometres from San Lorenzo beach and very close to Gijón’s Jardín Botánico Atlántico (Atlantic Botanical Garden). It presents itself as one of the oldest llagares (cider mills) in Asturias, in operation since 1881; around two decades ago the family opened a restaurant and function rooms next to it.
The cooking is classic Asturian: fabada (bean and pork stew), tortos (fried maize-flour cakes), meat cooked on a hot stone, salt cod, pork loin chunks in cider or spit-roasted lamb, with home-made desserts such as rice pudding. They serve their own natural cider, cider sangria and sweet cider, and some of the vegetables come from their own greenhouses. The dining rooms are decorated with chestnut barrels, and there is a children’s play area and private car park.
By prior booking they run guided tours of the traditional llagar with a tasting of cider drawn straight from the barrel, which can be combined with one of their menus. The function rooms host espichas (Asturian cider feasts with cider drawn straight from the barrel), weddings, first communions and other celebrations.
