History and atmosphere

About Sidra Canal

Sidra Canal is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in Lavandera, in rural Gijón. The family made home cider from local apples until, in 1955, Avelino Canal founded the company and began selling and distributing his cider to establishments across Asturias. Today it is run by his son, Andrés Canal.

The llagar has a capacity of more than a million litres. The apples, largely from their own harvest, are pressed in four hydraulic presses and one pneumatic press, and the cider rests in chestnut barrels and temperature-controlled steel tanks. It makes two natural ciders: the traditional one under the Canal brand, and El Santu, covered by the Sidra de Asturias Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

Both ciders are sold in cases of twelve bottles through the company’s online shop, with courier delivery. Both have won prizes at the Nava, Villaviciosa and Gijón competitions, and in 2011 El Santu received first prize for the best traditional natural cider from the PDO Regulatory Council.
