About Sidra Menéndez
Sidra Menéndez is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in Fano, in rural Gijón, next to the church of San Juan de Fano. It dates back to the 1940s, when Gerardo Menéndez Fano began making cider under the Gerardo Quintana brand at the nearby Quintana llagar. In 1968 his son Sabino Menéndez Trabanco took over and renamed the cider after the family surname; today it is run by the third generation.
The Fano premises were built from 1991 onwards and extended in 2009 with a 900 m² barrel cellar holding chestnut casks. The llagar is surrounded by eight hectares of its own orchards in the Fano and Valdornón valleys, farmed organically, from which it makes Sidra Menéndez DOP Ecológica and Val d'Ornon DOP, as well as traditional Menéndez natural cider. At the entrance stands a panera (a large Asturian raised granary) on eight pegoyos (pillars).
Turismo Asturias lists guided tours from Monday to Friday, booking required, which follow the cider-making process and end with a tasting of cider from the barrel; they are suspended in October and November, at the height of the apple harvest. The llagar has a shop open to the public from Monday to Friday.

Makes its own cider and sells it direct: at the cellar, in shops or online.
Quality labels
- PDO Sidra de Asturias Protected designation of origin for Asturian cider, made with apples of authorised varieties grown in Asturias. The same llagar can sell cider with and without the PDO.
- Organic production Cider certified as organic by the body in its territory: Ekolurra, CPAEN, COPAE, CRAEGA or AB in the French Basque Country.
