History and atmosphere

About Llagar Castañón

Llagar Castañón is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in Villaviciosa, founded in 1938 by Alfredo García Menéndez, who put up the first building in the Santa Ana neighbourhood of Quintes with the money he got for his old passenger bus. His son-in-law, Julián Castañón Gil, carried on the business, and since 1982 it has been run by his grandson, Julián Castañón García; the fourth generation already works there too.

The current llagar, in Quintueles, opened in December 2011 to make room for growth. It combines wooden barrels with steel tanks and makes Castañón natural cider, Val de Boides under the Sidra de Asturias Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and other apple drinks. Its ciders have won medals at the Sagardo Forum International Competition.

It runs guided tours, booking required, for most of the year (there are no tours between the early-December long weekend and Epiphany): a walk of about 45 minutes through the cider-making process, with a tasting, and an extended version with a culín (a small pour of cider) drawn straight from the barrel and a snack. It also hires out its premises for events and has an online shop.
