About Sidra Acebal
Sidra Acebal is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in Cabueñes, Gijón, beside the road from Piles to El Infanzón. The story begins in the late 19th century, when Benito Acebal made cider at home for the family; his son, known as El Fraile, built the current building in 1925 and installed some of the first industrial presses in Asturias. The fourth generation, the first to devote itself solely to cider, runs the business today.
The llagar has a capacity of around 500,000 litres, with traditional and pneumatic presses and steel and fibreglass tanks. It was one of the llagares involved in the early days of the Sidra de Asturias PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), and since 2007 it has sold El Carrascu, its designation-of-origin cider, alongside Acebal natural cider. It has several times been named the most prestosa (tastiest) cider at Gijón de Sidra.
By prior booking by phone or email, it runs tailored tours of the facilities and its own apple orchards, with a tasting of cider drawn straight from the tanks.
