About Sidra Foncueva
Sidra Foncueva is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in San Román, in the municipality of Sariego. Its story begins in the late 19th century with Guadalupe Vigón, from whom the family still in charge of cider-making is descended. Over time the premises have been extended and modernised, but the llagar has kept to a modest size, with output of around 500,000 litres.
The apples, Asturian and hand-selected, have come partly from the family’s own orchards since 1997. The must ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and then rests in chestnut barrels until bottling. The llagar sells two natural ciders for pouring from height (escanciar), Foncueva Natural and Foncueva Selección, and also makes fresh unpasteurised apple juice under the Zen brand.
Its website lists a series of awards for the best natural cider in Asturias at the Nava and Villaviciosa competitions between 1988 and 2012, some of them under the Sareganu brand.
