About Sidra La Coruja
Sidra La Coruja is a small producer of organic natural cider in the south of Cantabria, linked to the La Coruja del Ebro rural tourism centre in Sobrepeña de Ebro (Valderredible). In 2007 the family planted around 250 apple trees, brought from Asturias, in an old vegetable garden about 500 metres from the house; there are as many as eight kinds of apple – sharp, semi-sharp, sweet and bitter – among them Regona, Raxao, San Roqueña, Verdialona, De la Riega and Xuanina. They are late-flowering varieties, because there can be frosts in the valley until May, and the apples are picked by hand in November and December.
The cider mill is in Polientes, the municipal capital. The apples are crushed, left to rest in the press for a few hours and pressed slowly the next day; the must ferments in tanks at between 9 and 11 degrees and the cider is bottled in April or May, at around 6.5% alcohol and with no additives whatsoever. Production is small and depends on each year’s harvest. The orchard and the cider making are certified organic by the Cantabrian Organic Farming Regulatory Council (CRAE).
Anyone wishing to visit the cider mill or place an order can get in touch by phone. During the harvest and cider-making season they organise activities in which visitors pick and press apples and taste the must, and the orchard is open to visitors. The cider is sold at the rural guesthouse itself and in several shops and restaurants in Valderredible, Campoo and Santander.
