History and atmosphere
About El Vaskito cider house
El Vaskito is a cider house with a restaurant in Igara, a neighbourhood on the west side of San Sebastián next to the Portuetxe business park. It occupies a farmhouse more than a hundred years old and is run by Iñaki Azkue. The idea is to do txotx without leaving the city, and all year round, not just in season: the natural cider is poured straight from the kupela (barrel).
There are two spaces. The cider house dining room, for around 80 people, has the traditional atmosphere, with long tables and barrels. Next to it is a quieter 40-seat restaurant with its own menu. In both, the grill takes centre stage: seasonal produce which, they say, Iñaki buys daily at the market and the fish auction, cooked as simply as possible.
Menus
The cider house has four menus including cider and water, from €32 to €63 per person. The most classic one has salt cod omelette, salt cod with peppers and onion, txuleta (T-bone steak) and cheese with quince (€50); two others start with spider crab. Groups of six or more have separate menus, with grilled fish and steak.
Getting there
The bus stops on Avenida de Tolosa (Dbus and Lurraldebus) are about a 10-15 minute walk away, and the Lugaritz "topo" train station about 17 minutes. Closed on Tuesdays.
