About Llagar Alonso
Llagar Alonso makes Sidra Natural Alonso in Ciañu (Langreo), in the Samuño valley, about 300 metres from the mining train. The llagar (cider mill) was founded in 1939 and closed in the 1970s; it reopened in 1997 under Carlos Alonso, son of the founder Jacinto Alonso Díaz, known as “El Pecau”, and since 2003 it has been run by Mª del Mar Camblor González and her son Javier Díaz. In 2014 it moved from Nava to Ciañu, with new facilities and the same traditional, hand-crafted method.
The cider is made from apples alone: they are chopped and pressed, the must ferments in barrels, the cider is racked to clarify it and it is bottled when it is ready, between six and ten months after the apples are crushed. It produces a traditional natural cider and another under the Sidra de Asturias Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which it sells by the case and in packs.
The premises house a chigre (traditional Asturian cider tavern) with a bar, dining room and shop, open from Thursday to Sunday from midday, with a winter closure between January and March. For groups of fifteen or more it organises espichas (Asturian cider feasts with cider drawn straight from the barrel) by reservation, either standing with tapas or with a main course, with cider from the barrel poured by professionals; every group gets a tasting of cider from the barrels and, on request, an explanation of how it is made.
