History and atmosphere

About Isastegi cider house

Historically, livestock farming was the main activity at the Isastegi farmhouse, although the family made cider for their own use. In 1983 they decided to make the cider house their main business. After major refurbishments and extensions, today it is a cider house with fully modernised facilities. The apples used are home-grown or come from the Tolosaldea area, as the cider house tries to buy up all the local apples. However, as apples in the Basque Country can be scarce depending on the harvest, they also bring in apples from Galicia and France.

Specialities

Salt cod omelette, fried salt cod with peppers, T-bone steak (txuleta), and cheese, quince paste and walnuts for dessert, with lamb available if ordered in advance.

Isastegi has been selling its cider since 1984, made with its own apples and those of farmhouses in Tolosaldea. Its online shop sells standard and Premium Euskal Sagardoa, other ciders and cider vinegar.

Quality labels

  • DO Euskal Sagardoa Designation of origin for natural Basque cider: only apples of local varieties grown in Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and the French Basque Country. The seal goes on each bottle, not on the cider maker.
  • Organic production Cider certified as organic by the body in its territory: Ekolurra, CPAEN, COPAE, CRAEGA or AB in the French Basque Country.
  • Gorenak Quality mark of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa for agri-food products from Gipuzkoa.
