About Llagar La Morena
Llagar La Morena is at Alto de Viella, in the municipality of Siero, near Parque Principado and at the geographical centre of Asturias. Some guides list it as one of the oldest llagares (cider mills) in the region: from the mid-19th century the family known as “casa La Morena” made cider here, as well as farming and running a bar and a tobacconist’s. It is a llagar certified by the Sidra de Asturias PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and a cider bar (sidrería) holding the “Sidrerías de Asturias, Calidad Natural” quality brand.
The stone and chestnut-wood building has two spaces: the front one keeps the feel of an old cider bar, with wooden ceilings, a traditional press and cider-making tools; the back one, larger and more modern, is used for espichas (Asturian cider feasts with cider drawn straight from the barrel), celebrations and company meals. Outside there are open-air tables.
The house makes its own cider, including Prado y Pedregal with PDO status, which has won several awards as the best cider in Asturias. The cooking is traditional Asturian, with pote (Asturian bean and greens stew), fabada (bean and pork stew), tripe, meat and fish, and it has won prizes at pote and tripe competitions.
