About Sidra Juanín
Sidra Juanín is a family-run llagar (cider mill) in Fozana de Abajo, in the parish of Tiñana (Siero), halfway between Oviedo and Pola de Siero. Juan Rodríguez García set it up as a business in 1885; in 1993 his grandchildren, the siblings Miguel and Mª Teresa Rodríguez Menéndez, took over, and they combine traditional cider-making with technical improvements.
The llagar has capacity for about 200,000 litres of natural cider. According to Siero Town Council, it has two 10,000-kilo presses, three wooden barrels and fourteen fibreglass ones, and it does not offer guided tours.
In 1998 the family refurbished a space next to the llagar, of about 75 square metres, to host espichas (traditional gatherings where cider is drawn from the barrel) to order, for groups of between 20 and 65 people, standing or seated; bookings for the space are confirmed with a deposit. In addition, the bar and sidrería (cider bar) opens to the public at weekends, from Friday to Sunday, from 12:30.
