About Gartziategi cider house

The current owner’s great-grandfather already knew the cider press at the farmhouse where Gartziategi cider house now stands. According to the records, Gartziategi has been operating as a cider house since the 16th century, which may make it one of the oldest still running today. It still keeps wooden barrels that are 100 years old. The cider house has its own apple orchard and tops up its harvest with apples from Bizkaia, Galicia, Asturias or France. It currently produces close to 100,000 litres of cider a year.

Documented as far back as the 16th century, this cider house has always enjoyed a good reputation, both for its appearance and for the excellent ciders made there.

All Gartziategi’s cider carries the Euskal Sagardoa Designation of Origin, including an organic one and an aged one, and it can be bought in its online shop.

As well as a cider house, it’s a cider maker: it makes its own cider, and what’s served at the table comes from its own cellar.

Quality labels

  • DO Euskal Sagardoa Designation of origin for natural Basque cider: only apples of local varieties grown in Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and the French Basque Country. The seal goes on each bottle, not on the cider maker.
  • Organic production Cider certified as organic by the body in its territory: Ekolurra, CPAEN, COPAE, CRAEGA or AB in the French Basque Country.
