About Lizeaga cider house
Lizeaga is a family cider house at the Gartziategi farmhouse and cider mill, on the banks of the Urumea in Martutene (San Sebastián), a five-minute walk from Astigarraga. The house, some 450 years old, was built in the 16th century for making cider, and cider has been made there generation after generation. In 1918 Julian Arrieta bought it from the Count of Peñaflorida, and in 1988 the brothers Gabriel and Joxe Mari Lizeaga gave the cider house their surname.
It is open almost all year: the txotx season (when cider is drunk straight from the cask) starts in January, and the cider house menu (chorizo, salt cod omelette, fried salt cod with peppers, T-bone steak or txuleta, and cheese with quince paste and walnuts) is served from January to April; from May to November there is an à la carte menu. The cellar still holds one of the kupelas (casks) made by great-grandfather Joxe Mari, who started making them at the age of 70, using acacia and oak instead of the usual chestnut.
It makes natural cider with the Euskal Sagardoa DO and apple juice. It runs guided tours of the cellar with a tasting of its ciders, from the barrel and from the bottle, before the meal; these can be booked with transport included. Together with Petritegi, it promotes “Urumea, sagardoaren ibaia” (Urumea, the river of cider), a re-enactment of the old practice of carrying barrels of cider by barge down the river to San Sebastián.

From tree to bottle
Lizeaga’s own house cider
As well as a cider house, it’s a cider maker: it makes its own cider, and what’s served at the table comes from its own cellar.
Quality labels
- DO Euskal Sagardoa Designation of origin for natural Basque cider: only apples of local varieties grown in Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and the French Basque Country. The seal goes on each bottle, not on the cider maker.
